Tape 1

Tape 1

The audio on one side of this tape appears to be from the Rye Quartet. At some point, they are introduced with ages: Wanda age 14, Alton age 16, Glen age 18 and Donald age 20. Charles has some guest appearances and would have been age 12 I believe.

Given that some of the writing on the boxes doesn’t fully match up to some information mentioned on the tapes, I decided the best way to organize things would be to stack the tapes then randomly number them with post it notes.

I also made an attempt to capture song titles and names of those singing but… Maybe you all can help fill in the missing details.

This tape ends with Donald reciting the following poem.

I have only just a minute, just 60 seconds in it

Forced upon me, can’t refuse it

Didn’t seek it, didn’t choose it

I must suffer if I lose it, give account if I abuse it

Just a tiny little minute, but eternity is in it

Alan,
What you have provided for our family in this project is beyond words. You have captured a place in time that we loved and that helped to shape us. Now, as we go forward, we will be privileged to relive these great memories just as they happened so many years ago. I cannot comprehend the time and effort you put into this project. Furthermore, I cannot comprehend the skill and understanding it took to make this happen. I am forever grateful and endebted to you. Thank you for this selfless gift!!
I love you!

I have been working on a mini documentary for about 5 months about the life of a DJ who worked at that radio station in the mid-1950s. His name was Ron Lipe and he worked in Crossett and El Dorado before moving on to St. Louis area. There he interviewed Elvis at a concert in 1957. At the time he ran an Elvis Fan Club. Three years later, he went to Graceland with another Fan Club President and awarded him a crown as “The King of Rock and Roll” In 1967 he signed on at KSHE, the longest surviving Rock station on the FM dial in the United States. Hearing vintage tapes of this guy from that era started the process of myself publishing a coffee-table book about the Radio station in 2009. The website I am entering is about the book and is interactive with it. I was wondering if I could use the Rye Singers “Turn Your Radio On” in the video? I will credit you. Also, is there anywhere in your tapes where the announcer does a station ID? This is the last audio I have. The video I am producing contains vintage 8mm home movies of driving around St. Louis while you hear the recordings of the Elvis interview as well as audio from his time at KSHE. It also has vintage film I found of Graceland in 1960 as well as photos of Elvis getting the crows. It has taken me years to find these things. The crown story was so incredible, I did not put it in the book because I found it hard to believe without seeing a photo. Thanks for your time. This is an amazing collection you have!
